Focus was inspired by the novel Siddartha by Herman Hesse. In the story Siddartha tried many different approaches to reach enlightenment. Each approach gave him a narrow path to follow, which gave him an equally narrow perspective of reality.
Perspective is a tool used by artists to guide the viewer through the work and help gain an understanding, but the world does not exist in a singular perspective. In these photographs, a lens cap is used as a path to guide the viewer. The cap is placed into the center of the frame and the camera is then set to focus on the cap, causing the environment to be completely out of focus.
These photographs try to capture environments rather then landscapes. Environments are not passive but are instead active processes that are invisible. Sometimes you have to focus on nothing to see everything.
